I live with a trumpeter and so am used to hearing a variety of trumpet sounds, noises and effects. I decided to record him playing, yet I wanted to explore the sounds in the context of how I heard them in the flat: the muffled phrases, the loud attacks and the atmospheric clinks and vibrations. I decided to juxtapose these elements through splitting up vibrant, realistic trumpet sounds with ambient imaginary spaces. These provide a stark contrast, which I embrace separately as well as merge together at different times. The piece is titled ‘Valve’ due to it being a vital element of the instrument itself as well as its use for controlling and effecting movement, which is the purpose of the aforementioned contrasting elements of the piece.
